Personal Web Hosting Free Or Cheap?
April 5, 2008
After you have spent some time and creativity on designing your personal web site now its time to publish it on the World Wide Web for all to see it. When coming to web hosting, many face the dilemma of choosing between free or paid web hosting.
After you have spent some time and creativity on designing your personal web site now its time to publish it on the World Wide Web for all to see it. When coming to web hosting, many face the dilemma of choosing between free or paid web hosting.
Although the costs associated with paid web hosting is rather small, its still money.
An easy and money free solution might seem to be registering it with a free web-hosting provider.
They come in large numbers today and the 10-20 Megs of free personal space they usually offer sounds tempting. Not to mention that some of them even offer POP3 for your e-mail address on their web site or FTP access to your files on the web site.
So it looks like all this is building up to become quite an alternative to spending dear money for almost the same thing. I mean paid web hosting for an individuals web site sound a little pretentious, doesnt it?
Sure paid web hosting gives some more space, quite a few more features and all that, but do you need them anyway? You probably just need a web server that can feed .HTML and maybe some simple java scripts to your visitor. Its not like you are ever going to need an SQL database, support for .ASP or .PHP. You just want your own web site, not an e-commerce solution or you are ever going to need more than one e-mail address for your own use.
A more careful look at the matter is likely to make the right decision easier to take. As a matter of fact, depending on the objectives trusted to your personal web site, the decision between free or cheap almost dictates itself. You should also keep in mind that you actually trusting your virtual image to the web host.
In exchange for the hosting you wont be asked for money, but there could be banners, hot links, frames, popup windows or other forms of online advertising that will interfere with the content of your web site, possibly having a bad effect on its look and almost certainly annoying your visitors. Another minus is that your traffic is not likely to attain very high values due to the long domain name. People are not going to return to your web site simply because they forgot its URL. Therefore if people havent added your site to their bookmarks, and if your web site is not easily reachable through search engine search or fro other linked sites, it is very likely that your traffic scores would not be very impressive.
A personal web site could be very useful asset in promoting your professional image to potential or actual employers and business contacts.
Regardless we are considering the URL or e-mail address, what would an employer for example think when handed a business card with an e-mail address like yourname@freeserver.com. Would you feel comfortable going to a job interview and leaving your resume referring to your online portfolio available at www.yourname.yetanotherfreehost.com? All your effort and skill displayed by your web content would be almost surely hurt by as little as your URL. Not fair, but likely.
A part of the image of successful professionals nowadays is a good personal website.
It is well known that success generates success. The look of a personal URL and e-mail such us www.yourname.biz or contact@yourname.com would definitely benefit to your image as a professional. As you were diligent enough to have a personal website, the matter of trusting it to a free web host or investing an additional and usual small amount of money might be the difference of being associated with a success story of your career or with the clich of a quite all right fellow that is barely struggling and would make compromises even when it comes to its image.
Any problems with the web host, possible downtime, and narrow bandwidth will chase your visitors away and will be associated to your web site.
On the other hand, if your are just stating your experience with the World Wide Web, or if your are setting up a web site with only close friends and relatives as intended audience, a free web host might just do it for you. These are just a few of the examples of having a good reason to publish your web site on a free hosting provider.
Free web hosts helped thousands of people to familiarize themselves with the Internet experience, as first cradles for their web presence. This is one of the reasons free web hosts have contributed to the overall popularity of the Internet. As comfortable as cradles are, you cant spend your whole life in the cradle!
So, if you are planning to have a web site to represent you online and you want to be taken seriously, to actually enhance your personal image, make right. Make your web site a living proof of your thoroughness and start with your URL.

Free Web Hosting Options
April 2, 2008
Where can I find free web hosting?
Where can I find free web hosting?
There are hundreds of free web hosting services on the web. You can type free web hosting into any major search engine and get an expanded list. However, when you sign up for free hosting account, you are basically signing an expanded advertising agreement.
What exactly is free hosting?
In exchange for free hosting, the company can place ads your website. The ads can be placed on the top of the main page, the top of every page, or on the sides. The ads are usually not targeted. It is possible that they wont match the demographics of your web visitors. In addition, they are not customized to match the content on your web page.
This is a very expensive exchange program if your goal is to build up an online business. The area above the fold, everything that is visible without scrolling, is the most effective advertising area on the entire site. This is the area you should use for your affiliate links, Google Adsense, paid links and expanded site navigation.
Some free web hosting contracts go a step further and ask for your participation in their email marketing campaigns. You will receive emails that require a click through to a merchant site, and/or fill out endless surveys. This can be very time consuming and annoying.
Before you sign any free hosting contract ask to see sample sites. You want to get a feel for the types of ads that are being shown on other website. What do you want to look for?
1. Do you see pop-up ads? What about banners?
2. How large are the ads?
3. Are they just off topic or are they inappropriate?
4. Where are the ads? Are they on every single page or on selected pages?
Even if the ads are not on every page, watch out. It could mean that the hosting service has figured out which pages bring in the most revenue and they can afford to ignore everything else. Guess what? If it brings in lots of revenue for them, it could probably bring in lots of revenue for you.
Theres free and then theres FREE
If the space is free, what about the domain name?
If your new site will look like http://yoursite.freewebhost.com youre getting a subdomain for your site. Its not really your unique domain name. They are simply loaning you a space for your stuff.
This is not a unique domain name that you can use to brand your business. You cant use it anywhere except with this particular web hosting company. Ditto if the new domain names is http://www.freewebhost.com/yoursite/ .
So what if they offer a truly unique domain name?
How long will it take before you actually own the domain name? Even the cheap web hosting services will require that you stay with the company for thirty to sixty days before you can keep a free domain name.
What happens if you want to switch to another company before the period is up? Sometimes theres a charge to keep the domain name or to transfer it. This should be clearly stated in their FAQ’s or in the text of the hosting contract before you agree to use their service.
Do you have enough bandwidth?
Many free web hosting services are providing their services in such a way that you will need to upgrade your hosting package if your site has any degree of minor success. The tipping point is usually bandwidth. That is a measure of how much text, pictures, ftps etc. you can send to your web customers every month.
The Bandwidth in your contract is measured on a monthly basis. Check the contract to see if there are any fees for going over your monthly amount, or if you will lose your free hosting privileges.
Free host today, no host tomorrow
There is a very high turnover for free web hosting services that heavily depend on advertising revenue. Even the most successful web companies will find that their advertising revenue varies on a monthly basis. Will the company suddenly go out business if they hit a three month slump?
There should be a written policy on what happens to your content if they site suddenly goes out of business. Can you still access your files? Is there an alternative URL or login site with your information? How much time do you have?
You are only as reliable as your hosting service
Check out the statistics on the uptime for their servers. This applies to any hosting service, whether you are paying or not. If their uptime is in the low 90s and below, then try to find another hosting provider.
You are taking a big risk if you use a free web hosting services for your business site. The inability to control your advertising, high turnover rates among the free hosting providers, and variable contracts usually spells disaster for e-commerce sites.
To run a successful online venture, 24-hour live customer service, high uptimes ratios and control of your advertising space is a must. These features are also the major weaknesses of the average free hosting provider.
A better option for you company would be to sign up for an affordable or cheap web hosting provider. You will have many service options in this category and can usually avoid the limitations of the free hosting companies.

How to Use Your Own Domain Name with a Free Hosting Account
April 1, 2008
You’re not ready yet to shell out $100 bucks a year for a web hosting service, so you want to stick with a free website. However, you dislike the long and messy URL addresses that usually are associated with them, and you’d rather use your very own domain name. Fortunately there is a solution, and it is called URL forwarding.
We recommend that you register your domain with a reputable registrar that also offers you free domain forwarding. Once you’ve found and selected a registrar and have registered your domain name with them, log into your account, go to the domain management or account management section, and look for the URL Forwarding or Domain Forwarding option.
Usually, your domain name will appear next to a text box where you will type in the physical location of your website. Let’s say you’re using Geocities and your website is at a directory called “mysite”. You will then have to type: “www.geocities.com/mysite” in the textbox. Once you’ve done it, save your changes.
Within a few hours, type your domain name in the address bar of your web browser, and you will instantly be transported to your website. This way, your visitors won’t need to remember a long and messy web address, and will have quick and easy access to your free hosted website by just typing your domain name in the address bar.

Free Web Hosting: Is It Worth It?
March 29, 2008
If you are just looking into getting your feet wet in the area of web hosting, it may be tempting to take up one of the various offers from sites who are offering free web hosting services. They offer a certain type of site with a certain list of amenities and you have to go through a series of changes to make your free web host offer work to your advantage.
Free web hosting companies make their money differently than the average web hosting company, that charges you a set amount for your site. They usually make their money offering you a poor site with the option of upgrading to a whole new site, which of course is not free. If this is not the case, these free web hosting sites place banners and pop up ads all around your site, and that is the way they make most of their money.
With the latter usually being the case with free web hosting sites, ask yourself who these companies are to be making any profit off of your traffic? If people travel to your site and decide to click on certain sponsors, that should count towards the pennies in your pocketbook, not theirs. If you are not depending on yoru site to generate traffic and any type of income or reward for you, free web hosting may be okay for you. If you at all depend on your website for your financial stability and survival, forget about being cheap and pay for a good quality web host. That way, any ads that are found on your site are ads that you are aware of and that pay you for traffic you direct from your site to theirs.
There are numerous web hosting services and free web hosting services on the web. A great deal of the free web hosting sites offer adequate web hosting for a price in lieu of the generic, free version.

Free Ad Supported Website Hosting
March 26, 2008
Millions of website owners select low cost or free hosting options that may not be appropriate for commercial or small business websites. Based on one recent experience with a custom website client, I feel site owners need to understand that free ad supported website hosting is not for everyone.
The ads exchanged for free hosting offered from one major hosting company are described as done by inserting “advertising on a small portion of the site”. In fact this “small ad” is a top banner that covers the width of the screen with a height of 1.2 inches (30.4mm), and displays 3 separate ads. The choice of ads placed in the banner advertising is fed based on page content, so your site might feature an advertisement from your competition. This is fine for non-commercial personal sites, or a website monetized for advertising revenue only. It is senseless to advertise for your competition.
Website hosting is inexpensive. The decision to use free ad supported hosting should be considered carefully.
The cost for paid hosting ranges from modest to outrageous, so many business owners fall victim to overpriced hosting services because of inexperience. Some pay $1000’s USD per year for their domain, hosting, and maintenance when in fact their site is static and nothing is ever added. A monthly fee based on the contingency that something might need to be changed in the future is a waste of money if your website is launched and just gathers dust. If it is dynamic adding content frequently and you receive value for money, monthly fees are practical.
Tip: You do NOT have to include the copyright date on your web pages. Using the copyright symbol and the year means you have an obsolete website a year later. The cost to change the date each January hardly justifies paying thousands annually in monthly fees. Published material is covered locally and internationally by copyright law without specifying the year or including a copyright statement. The fact that content is published on your website means you own it. My advice is avoiding dated material and simply state “Copyright Material – All Rights Reserved”.
Another client told of a service where they paid $179 a month for a similar package which included a logo design and website graphics. Although their agreement also included high quality artwork of their logo for printed marketing materials, the service provider refused to make it available when requested. The website version was 3-color low resolution and looked fine online. Creating a 4-color CMYK high resolution version appropriate for professional printing should have been easy. Instead, the website owner was compelled to shop around and pay extra to have printed marketing materials designed.
When you remove “maintenance” as a service in the example above, your small business website can be online for less than $150 USD annual cost instead of $2148.00. The amount this customer saved was enough to pay for a custom site design, and then future savings of $2000 a year after the first year. You need a www domain and hosting, plus a site design. Dependable service companies are out there at less than $10 a year for your domain, and less than $5 a month for hosting. Why pay more? Choose carefully when you select someone to design your small business website, and their advice may save you more than the design.
Next, the technical implications of free ad supported website hosting may escape the notice of most site owners. In the recent incident, the XHTML code to create this site was deprecated by the free service when they automatically inserted code to generate the advertising banner. Instead of a website with zero code errors, 10 XHTML errors were added to each page because of the extra inserted code. Currently proper HTML or XHTML code is not mandatory for favorable search engine ranking, yet if you have a perfect design, there is the risk that deprecated code could affect ranking in the future if search algorithms change.
Small business owners are usually too busy running their day to day operations to learn about the best options for getting and keeping a website online. Free ad supported website hosting is available, but the downside needs to be understood before you opt for free hosting. If you select a web developer to design your website and they do not offer monthly fee based services, they will most likely offer advice for your best hosting options.
In conclusion, designers who offer value added services are viable choices for small business owners who choose to have fresh content added to their site frequently. Just make sure to communicate your needs for online and in print to maximize your results and avoid disappointment. I am opposed to free ad supported website hosting for small business websites because anything displayed on your site needs to promote your product or service. Advertising, especially competitive ads, detract from the positive first impression that is critical for the success of your small business website.

Paid Versus Free Hosting
March 22, 2008
For those just starting out in the world of online marketing it’s often a time where things need to be done as cheaply as possible. One of the areas where we try to cut expenses is through web hosting. With so many free web host providers available to us many often wonder why people would bother paying for web hosting.
There are no doubt pros and cons to both sides and as someone who has (and to a certain extent still does) used both free and paid hosting I thought I?d share some of what I have learnt in the hopes that it will help others out there make their decision.
Naturally the biggest advantage of free hosting is that the money you save can be used toward another part of your online business. And with the large amount of free providers available you are bound to find one the suits your needs, whether it’s the amount of bandwidth you need, the add-ons they may have: the ability to add forums or blogs, or the amount of sub domains you can have.
Though with all the pros of using a free host come several rather large cons. First and foremost to me is the lack of total control you have. Having recently experienced a major problem with one of the free hosts I used I quickly came to realise that if anything goes wrong you can be very limited in your options to fixing those problems. Another downfall may arise when your site starts building a lot of traffic ? which will be what you’re aiming for ? you and your visitors may lose access to your site for a certain period if you exceed the limit available to you. Then of course you may also find yourself limited in what type of advertising you can do: while not all free providers have advertising many may place certain ads, banners or even pop-ups on your site as a way of paying for the service they are supplying. This may not be a problem for personal web-pages but if it’s a business site you may quickly lose any credibility as it often lacks professionalism.
If you decide you want to start out with a free host make sure you read and understand all that is involved and any requirements/limits they may have before signing up. There is nothing worse than setting up a great page and building traffic to it only to find that in the long run you need to change providers.
When it comes to paid hosting the biggest con naturally is the expense, for many just starting out they can’t justify the expense as they are yet to see any return. As someone who has been in this position I well understand that reasoning, yet will honestly admit that once I took the plunge and decided to pay for my hosting it was the best decision I ever made.
With the competition being what it is, a little time spent researching will quickly reveal that you can get good hosting at incredibly reasonable prices. Paying for your hosting not only gives you total control over all aspects of your website, with a good provider you’ll not only find a lot of additional extras, things like cron jobs, unlimited mysql databases plus things like fantastico (one click installation of blogs and forums etc) and email management systems you will also discover that you can get often get unlimited domains and aren’t restricted by bandwidth limits etc.
If you’re just starting out with your online business I would urge you to at least look at finding a paid hosting provider so you can start off on the right foot straight away, but if you decide you can’t justify the expense, perhaps plan on a small site on a free host so you don’t have too much difficulty when you decide to upgrade to paid hosting.

Criteria For Free Web Hosting
March 21, 2008
Web hosting has become quite a fad in the ultra modern high tech world of today. There are a number of web hosting providers available and eagerly waiting for users to get hold of their services in the net. However, the search for a good web hosting provider is now considered a small feat for a lot of people who want to get the most out of their space in the popular sphere of the “world wide web.”
And just because you are seeking out a web host provider who is offering you its space on its server at no cost, it does not and should not mean that you should settle for one that is less than capable. With the choices that of web host providers around, you will surely find one that will work to your greatest advantage. Perhaps, you need a few tips in choosing. Look no further, here they are.
Do not think that web hosting providers who offer free services are charitable institutions with the vision and the mission to present every internet hooked individual in the planet the chance to make them known by creating their own websites where they can post almost any data, image or information that they want the world to see.
Simple economics would tell us that these providers have their ways and means to make their living through web hosting and keep it. And that is through advertising. With the millions and millions of enrolled and prospective users there is, it makes perfect sense that sponsors would grab the opportunity to advertise their goods and services on each of the users’ websites of these web hosting providers.
People passionate or even addicted to the alluring world of the internet are bound to check their websites on a regular basis. The more they see these advertisements, the more enticed they will be to go for the products or services. Psychologists have deduced this theory and it has been known to work in wondrous ways. Why do you think that television commercial pops up on your screen every few minutes?
In choosing a free provider, find one that has a good selection of sponsors; the more advertisements there are in the site, the more viable it is that the site will be around for a long, long time. Without sponsors that fuel their finances, web hosting providers could go broke and that would mean loss of all of your posted data.
Select a provider that gives you enough space for your needs. You decided to make a website for yourself with the aim of letting yourself make known to the world with the files and documents that you place online. Getting a provider which limits expected scope could be frustrating. Look for one that allows expansion. And while you are at it, you may also want to check on the limitations on file type and size.
Another thing that could cause you frustration is the speed and dependability of the provider, if you are not careful. A slow turtle like pace could take you hours on end to upload your stuff. Go for a site that is up and running, not one where you visit and it says “website is down for the moment, please check again later.”

The Good, the Bad and the Myths Surrounding Free Web Hosting
March 20, 2008
It seems that about everyone either has their own website or is on their way to getting one online. If you’re still contemplating how to get your website online, all the free web hosting options may send your head swimming! “Absolutely free web hosting,” “No strings attached ever,” “Get your site online today!” These promises abound on the World Wide Web. What’s a person to do? How do you choose? Not to worry, with a little information you will understand the good, the bad and the myths that surround free web hosting.
First of all, let’s look at a few myths surrounding free web hosting.
Myth Number 1: You will not have 24 hour support available with free web hosting. Not necessarily true! Yes, some hosting providers will not offer 24 hour technical support. But, with a little digging, you will find a provider that offers around the clock support.
Myth Number 2: Your website will have much more down time and crash often with free web hosting. Maybe. But again, this depends on who you decide upon as your provider. Find a provider that prides themselves with offering excellent service to all their clients and it will serve you well.
Myth Number 3: Free Web hosting providers will inundate your site with ads. Now this one has the most merit. Until just recently a free web hosting account basically guaranteed an attack of ads on your site. But, with the increasing number of providers offering free hosting, you can now find a provider that promises to keep his or her ads to a minimum.
Before we get into the bad, let’s cover the good about free web hosting.
For starters, it’s free! If you are developing a personal page with relatively few images, free may just suit you well. Using a free web hosting provider gives you the option to put a site up that you normal would opt not to. An increasingly popular item to host online is a resume. You could also publish a wedding or baby site. Some providers also offer the use of an online web site builder. For a basic site, free hosting is a very good price.
Now for the ugly side of free web hosting. Unless you do your homework, you could very easily end up with sub-par service. Your site may be frequently down. Security measures may be lax, which could allow others to hack into your site. The provider may not offer back-up services and you more than likely won’t have access to the root menu.
The silver lining: since there are many providers offering free web hosting you can find one that more than likely offers what you need. If developing a small site, feel free to give free web hosting a try. If it doesn’t work out, fire your provider. Either move on to another free provider or pay the small fee for monthly web hosting service.

Website Design With Free Web Hosting
March 19, 2008
For anyone who is thinking about having a new website, it is not just the cost of the web design they should be thinking about, it is also the cost of the web hosting. Over time this hosting can soon add up to cost a lot of money, money which could have been spent on promoting the site. Web design is however a cut throat business sector these days and many web designers are now offering affordable website design services with free hosting.
My name is Steve Hill and I have a number of websites, I see it as a form of hobby, a bit sad you may be thinking. I love to find new ways of promoting these sites and also trying to obtain links from other webmasters, this is not that easy and therefore is a good challenge for me. What used to always annoy me about the net was the cost of web hosting and also the fact that I had to pay it. To me it is like paying tax, I hate it!
Then out of the blue a couple of years ago a friend of mine introduced me to the concept of having a website built and designed with free lifetime hosting attached. Surely this could not be possible I thought to myself, why would anyone want to offer such a service? My friend who is very clued up with all things connected to the web, stated that there are so many people offering a web design service that they will basically wany your business and that I should make it as part of the deal. It goes along the old saying of, if you do not ask, you do not get.
Over the last year I have had eighteen new sites built and am not paying for hosting on any of them. I would advise anyone to ensure that the next site you have designed for you comes with a free hosting for life package.
